Meet the team.
Hugh Keith, BA, PGCE, MITI – language teacher, translator and interpreter
Hugh studied modern languages at Oxford University and then trained as a teacher in York. After working at a German university and a school in London he joined Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, where he taught classes in translation and interpreting and set up the university’s commercial language service.
In 1992 he relocated to Germany and built up a business as a freelance translator and interpreter working for the German market which he continued from his Edinburgh base from the mid-90s. Over the past fifteen years he has also organised workshops for interpreters and translators in Edinburgh and Cologne.
Hugh is a member of the UK Institute of Translation and Interpreting and has served as a member of the conference committee and chairman of the ITI Scottish Group.
Alan Ross, MA, Dip Trans – language and cross-cultural communication trainer, translator
Alan has been working as a trainer and translator for more than 30 years. After graduating in German Studies, he qualified as a teacher of English as a foreign language and taught in the UK, Japan and Germany.
In 1984 Alan founded a language services company which today offers a wide range of translating, consulting and training services to corporate customers mainly in German-speaking countries. In recent years, Alan’s work in cross-cultural communication has taken him to countries as diverse as Denmark and India.
In addition to the Edinburgh Workshops, Alan designs and delivers one-on-one tuition courses for businesspeople and other concepts for learning in context – such as whisky tours.
Having founded Xchange Services in 2008 to provide high-end translating and interpreting services, we now also offer intensive workshops for translators and interpreters as well as tailor-made tuition for individuals. Our aim is to assist professionals in improving their communication skills and thus achieving greater success – both professionally and personally. As firm believers in the importance of culture and context in language learning, we deliver our courses exclusively in Edinburgh.
